The FIFA World Cup 2022 took place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022. The whole event was special for many reasons. To start with, it was the first time that a Middle Eastern country hosted this kind of football tournament.
Qatar invested billions of dollars in preparations. The main focus was set on stadiums. The country designated ten venues for the FIFA World Cup 2022, all of which are located within a 55-km radius of Doha, Qatar’s capital city. Let’s see what has made those stadiums so special.

What Are the Hosting Stadiums?

Considering the specificity of the local climate, Qatar decided to make the football venues as comfortable as possible. All stadiums were equipped with a state-of-the-art climate control system to manage the internal temperature. Well, there are even more features to surprise you with.

Al Bayt Stadium

Capacity: 60,000
The stadium was opened in 2021 under the design of Dar Al-Handasah. It has some resemblance to a tent used by nomadic people in the Qatar and Gulf region. Being one of the biggest facilities, it won’t find many implementations following the World Cup. This is why the modular upper tier will be taken away and seats will be used for different purposes. The area will be changed into a five-star hotel with a shopping center, food court, gym, and other facilities.

Lusail Stadium

Capacity: 80,000
Being the biggest facility of the tournament, it was designed by architects Foster + Partners and Populous. The light and shadow of a “fanart” lantern, facade panels, and steel frames have some resemblance with regional artistic bowls. The stadium was opened in 2022 along with the start of the championship. The seating bowl consists of three tiers. The PTFE roof lets in light to let the grass field grow naturally. Now the venue can serve as the space for affordable housing units, shops, food outlets, health clinics, and even educational facilities.

Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium

Capacity: 40,000
Ramboll and Pattern Design designed the venue that was opened in 2020. Around 90% of the construction materials were reused or recycled from the old stadium. Upon the final match of the World Cup, trees will be moved to other locations on the property and 20,000 seats will be used for other sporting events.

Al Janoub Stadium

Capacity: 40,000
Qatar’s seafaring past served as the inspiration for the design of the given stadium. A retractable roof allows the further use of the stadium around the year. This can be done for local football games and even amateur football events. But the stadium will most likely get smaller by 20,000 seats following the World Cup.

Al Thumama Stadium

Capacity: 40,000
The stadium was designed with the motives of a gahfiya, the traditional woven cap worn by men across the Middle East. The architect Ibrahim M. Jaidah managed to make nod to local culture and use modern technology simultaneously. Now that the World Cup is over, 20,000 seats are going to be taken away. A boutique hotel located on the stadium’s upper stands will give a great view of the soccer field.

Education City Stadium

Capacity: 40,000
The concept of the venue was designed by Fenwick-Iribarren Architects and Pattern Design. Triangles in the form of a diamond-like geometrical pattern seem to change color with the sun’s movement across the sky. At night, the stadium demonstrates a digital light show, which doesn’t leave the audience indifferent.

Khalifa International Stadium

Capacity: 40,000
The stadium saw the world in 1976. It had to go through certain modifications for the World Cup. The stadium’s dual arches were maintained to keep the proper functionality of the cooling system. A new tier of seats increased the overall capacity to 40,000 seats.

Stadium 974

Capacity: 40,000
Consisting of 974 shipping containers and modular steel, this stadium is going to be removed just after the final match of the World Cup. Constructed by Fenwick-Iribarren Architects as a tribute to Qatar’s history, the standard shipping containers served as a platform for everything from concessions to stairs. Additional materials required for the venue were delivered in containers which are then used in the venue.

Qatar seems to prove itself as the record-breaker. The cost of the FIFA World Cup 2022 is not going to be exceeded in the nearest decades. With the stadiums becoming the main gem of the whole event, Qatar will be remembered for professionalism. These iconic stadiums have welcomed millions of football fans over the course of the month-long global sporting action. What is the future of these stadiums? We’ll be following the news.

Over and above being just a game, DOTA 2 has grown into a significant esports phenomenon. One of the top esports games in the world is Defense of the Ancients 2, or DOTA 2. It took the place of the popular MOD game “Warcraft III.” It has a significant fan base made up of participants, bettors, and spectators who continually hankering after the exhilarating game sensation. Every year, many competitions are available to DOTA 2 players. The largest prize pool in esports history, with almost $11 million on the line for the top teams in DOTA 2 tournaments throughout the world, needs a venue worthy of hosting an event. Due to the 10,000 tickets selling out in less than an hour, many people thought the KeyArena was too small before the event even started.

Unfortunately, despite being completely sold out, spectators at home will have observed that the competition lacked the buzz that Riot’s League of Legends World Championship was able to generate. Many thought that the fan-favorite team Na’Vi’s early exit from the event may have contributed to the drab mood. Valve wouldn’t have been too dissatisfied, since their lucrative Compendium campaign brought in an astounding $33 million. These DOTA 2 events are conducted there and feature significant prize pools. This article contains further information about these contests. Which venues are ideal for the DOTA 2 championship?

 List of Stadiums

1. Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt, Germany.

2. KeyArena, Seattle

3. Arena Nationala, Romania

4. Commerzbank Arena, Frankfurt

Commerzbank Arena, Frankfurt

There are other summer tournaments with significant prize pools outside The International, but that’s where the money is right now in esports. Next month, the ESL will host a Dota 2 competition with a six-figure prize pool. So this is a great opportunity to visit a tournament and make it more fun with real money betting with ecoPayz as other tournament viewers do.  The ESL One will take place in Frankfurt on June 28 and 29, and participants will compete for a prize pool now worth over $194,000 in a World Cup-caliber football stadium.

More than 51,000 spectators may sit down to watch ESL One Frankfurt 2014 in the enormous Commerzbank-Arena in Germany. Even though the TI4 pool is currently above $6 million, it won’t break any wins records, but it might well beat all prior live Dota 2 competitions. Since notable teams like Cloud 9 and Invictus Gaming have already qualified and there is just one seat open, we spoke to ESL One product manager James Lampkin on what to anticipate at the tournament. An eight-team, $150,000 event was staged by ESL prior to The International 2014 in the Commerzbank Arena, which hosted the 2006 World Cup and has a seating capacity of 52,000.

The Ricoh Arena in Coventry City and the Welford Road Stadium in Leicester Tigers have now hosted esports competitions in the UK. However, most of the action still happens in conference rooms. A partial dress rehearsal for the global finals, which would take place just one month later, drew almost 12,000 people to the field.

Evil Geniuses came in second at The International despite losing out to Invictus Gaming for the majority of the prize. Meanwhile, Invictus struggled to duplicate their success at the most important DOTA 2 championship and ended up finishing in seventh or eighth place.

Conclusion

The success of DOTA 2 shows that many esports attract a sizable and fervently loyal audience. Valve has been directly credited with helping DOTA 2 grow into a dominant force in esports, and they are also in charge of funding the enormous prize pools that draw in the finest players.

In the realm of esports, rental agreements with significant sports leagues are rather typical. Furthermore, it is during such trials that the organizers’ genuine skills are shown. The stadium’s conversion to meet the requirements of an esports competition is a difficult task. Many professional teams are found in the Dota Pro Circuit, a professional circuit, which also sponsors 25 significant tournaments annually.

However, the ESL staff has frequently been successful in doing so at Eintracht’s home stadium. After having the wildly successful Frankfurt Major of Dota 2 here, they transitioned to other genres including Hearthstone, Starcraft 2, CSGO, and League of Legends.

Once upon a time, the largest stadium in terms of capacity was the legendary Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Opened back in 1950, the arena was capable of hosting up to 200,000 fans per match. The record was set during the match between Brazil and Uruguay in the fourth World Cup. At that time, 199,850 spectators attended the match. But progress, as well as stricter security requirements, left Mario Filho (official name) no choice but – total reconstruction. As a result, and to date, the stadium has a capacity of 78,838 spectators. But reconstruction continues and after all the work is complete, the capacity of the arena will be 95,000 people!

But even this figure will not allow Maracana to regain the podium in terms of capacity, as it (the podium) belongs to a stadium with 150,000 seats for spectators!

Where? Where do people love sports in general and soccer in particular so much that they built such a grand structure? The answer is simple – in North Korea! And as it turned out, they love not only and not so much the soccer as the annual mass spectacles dedicated to important events for the country! The stadium, which has received a very “telling” name of May Day, is located in the capital of the country – the city of Pyongyang, and, as already noted, can accommodate up to 150,000 people! We should also recognize the rather original shape of the building – a magnolia flower, albeit quite monumental.

The stadium hosts home matches of the National Football Team. Competitions in other sports are also held here. But the main event, which sometimes gathers not only thousands of spectators, but also a hundred thousand participants, is the annual show Ariran (sports and theater show dedicated to the formation of DPRK).

It should be noted that the Ariran show is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s most massive sports and artistic performance! A peculiar “chip” of this performance is the “live panel” on the opposite side of the stadium from the spectators. Thousands of Korean schoolchildren reproduce “live” pictures from the country’s history with their precise movements!

The most expensive soccer stadium in the world today is the legendary Wembley (London, UK)! For its construction it was spent almost 1.5 billion U.S. dollars and 4 years of construction works!

It should be noted that, “legendary” was the stadium, built back in 1923 and hosted, among other things, the first postwar Olympic Games in 1948. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, but progress and increased demands did not leave a chance to this (along with Maracana) “veteran”! As a result, in 2003, the stadium was completely dismantled and the construction of a “descendant” began immediately in its place, opening its doors in 2007.

The new Wembley Stadium has not only an impressive capacity of 90,000 people (the second largest in Europe) but also a cutting-edge design! The project was designed by architectural guru Norman Foster, and implemented by Australian company Brookfield Multiplex. Stadium, thanks to the creators, also has its own remarkable “accessory” – the world’s largest loose element of the roof (315 meters long)!

The stadium, apparently trying to catch up with the achievements of its predecessor, has already marked such important sporting events as the 2012 Summer Olympics and two UEFA Champions League finals (2011 and 2013).

The most original, in terms of architectural solutions, we recognized the central sports arena of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics – the Bird’s Nest Stadium! This is where the opening and closing ceremonies were held. The arena is now the home stadium of the Chinese national soccer team and seats 91,000 spectators!

The multifunctional complex was designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, who were also behind the Allianz Arena described above. Construction took place from 2003 to 2008 and cost $423 million.

The construction details that make the Bird’s Nest unique are, without a doubt, the interwoven steel beams that enable the stadium to live up to its name. The installation of such a structure is a very complex and high-tech process. First, the architects worked productively on the calculations, and then, the builders, on the installation of multi-ton steel box, consisting of steel beams, each of which is unique in size, shape and weight. On the inside of the frame is wrapped with a film of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, protecting against the weather and equipped with lighting, finally giving the effect of lightness and “airiness” to a multi-ton structure!
